If you ran Google Ads a few years ago and you're looking at the platform today, it would feel like a different product. Almost everything is now decided by artificial intelligence — how much you pay per click, who sees your ads, even what the ads say. That's not a reason to avoid it. It's a reason to understand it before you spend.
First, what Google Ads actually is
Every time someone searches on Google, an auction happens in a fraction of a second. Advertisers bid for the chance to appear, and you only pay when someone clicks. That part hasn't changed. If someone searches "water heater repair near me," the businesses at the top of the page are there because of this auction — and a phone call from that search is worth far more than a flyer that hits the wrong mailbox.
Where AI took over
Three things changed, and each one matters to your wallet:
- Smart bidding. Google now sets your bid for every single search, guessing how likely that person is to buy. When it has good data, it's better at this than any human. When it doesn't, it guesses anyway.
- AI-built campaigns. Newer campaign types let Google write your headlines, pick your images and decide where your money goes across Search, Maps, YouTube and partner sites. Less work for you — but also less control.
- AI answers above the results. Google increasingly shows an AI-written answer at the top of the page before people see the ads or the regular listings. That changes how many people even reach an ad, and it's still shifting.
What this means for your budget
The AI is only as good as what it's told to optimize for. If the only signal it gets is "clicks," it will happily buy you a lot of cheap, useless clicks. If it can see which clicks turned into phone calls and form submissions, it starts hunting for customers instead of visitors. That's why conversion tracking comes before clever ad copy — it's the steering wheel for the whole machine.
The other change is that the guardrails matter more, not less. AI will test wild combinations of headlines and search terms. Some will be great. Some will be the wrong kind of attention. Someone still has to look at the search terms report, exclude the junk, and keep the campaign pointed at services that actually make you money.
Where a human still earns their keep
- Setting up call and form tracking so the AI optimizes toward revenue, not clicks
- Choosing what NOT to spend on — the services with thin margins, the towns you don't serve
- Reading the results weekly and making the calls a dashboard can't make
- Remarketing — staying in front of the people who visited and didn't call yet
Bottom line: Google Ads with AI is the fastest way to get in front of people who are searching for what you sell — but it rewards businesses that feed it honest data and prune it weekly. That's the work. If you'd rather hand that off, that's literally what we do every day.
