Last time we covered what GEO is and whether you need it. This one is the doing part: seven steps, in order, that make your business the one AI engines name when a customer asks. None of them require an agency — they require attention.
Step 1 — Make your facts identical everywhere
AI engines cross-check before they recommend. Your business name, services, service areas, hours and phone number should read the same on your website, your Google Business Profile and every listing — one disagreement and the engines hedge toward a source they can verify. Pick the canonical version of each fact and propagate it.
Step 2 — Say what you do in plain sentences
Engines quote sentences, not slogans. A page that states "We repair residential furnaces and heat pumps in Kansas City's northland suburbs" is quotable. "Comfort redefined" is not. Walk your homepage and service pages and make sure each one says what you do, for whom, and where — in the first paragraph, in plain words.
Step 3 — Shape pages as questions with answers
- Headings your customers actually ask: "How much does furnace replacement cost?" — then answer directly underneath.
- Short paragraphs, lists where they help, one idea per section.
- The answer in the first two sentences of each section — engines and humans both reward the direct version.
Step 4 — Stack the proof
Recommendations run on evidence: a complete Google Business Profile with a steady stream of honest reviews, testimonials with names attached, photos of real jobs, and mentions from other sites in your world — partners, suppliers, local directories. The proof isn't decoration; it's the citation trail an AI follows before naming you.
Step 5 — Let the machines read
If your robots.txt blocks AI crawlers, you're invisible by choice. Allow the major AI crawlers (GPTBot, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity) the same way you allow Googlebot, and keep an llms.txt file that describes your business in plain text — it's the cheat sheet engines are learning to read. Ours is at /llms.txt if you want to see the pattern.
Step 6 — Audit yourself monthly
Ask each major engine the question a customer would: "Who's a good [your trade] in [your town]?" — and read what comes back. Named? Quoted correctly? A competitor with better-organized facts in the answer instead of you? Note the gap, fix the source — usually your profile or a page that doesn't say it plainly — and ask again next month.
Step 7 — Keep it fresh
Everything above decays without maintenance: new reviews, updated pages, seasonal answers, facts that stay matched. AI visibility isn't a switch — it's a routine, the same way your truck maintenance is.
Bottom line: showing up in AI answers is earned with quotable facts, question-shaped pages, visible proof and a monthly audit — seven steps any owner can start this week. If you'd rather have the routine run for you, that's literally our SEO + AI Visibility program.
