Google Remarketing: AdWords and AdRoll

Remarketing illustration

Here's the part nobody says out loud about website traffic: almost everyone leaves without doing anything. They had a look, they got distracted, they left. Remarketing is the fix — it shows your ads afterward to the people who already met you once. Warmer audience, higher odds, and usually cheaper clicks than advertising to total strangers.

How it works, mechanically

A small piece of code on your website (a tag) quietly notes when someone visits. That drops them into an audience — say "visited the pricing page but didn't call." Then your ads follow them: when they read the news, watch YouTube, scroll their phone. Not spooky in practice — you're just back in the room at the moment they're ready.

The two tools in the title

  • Google Ads (AdWords) remarketing — show follow-up ads across Google's display network, in YouTube, and in search itself for people who already know you. Best when your customers are on Google's enormous map of sites and apps.
  • AdRoll — a separate platform that runs your remarketing across many networks from one dashboard and layers in email follow-ups. Handy when you want one place to manage retargeting beyond Google alone.

What matters more than the tool

  • Clean audiences — recent visitors, people who saw your pricing, people who started to contact you and stopped. "Everyone from the last 90 days" is lazy and it shows.
  • Fresh creative — the same banner for months becomes furniture. Rotate the message; give a reason to come back.
  • A sane frequency cap — following up is service; ten ads a day is a grudge.
  • Real tracking — did the people who saw the follow-up ads actually call or book? That's the only scorecard that matters.
The bottom line

Bottom line: remarketing is the highest-leverage use of ad money most small businesses never set up — you're advertising to people who already raised their hand. Whether it runs through Google Ads, AdRoll or both should be a strategy decision, not a default. We set these up and babysit them weekly; bring your website and we'll tell you honestly if it's worth it.
