Google AI Overviews: What Local Businesses Need to Know

2026-10-20 · By Todd Meisler

If you have searched for anything on Google recently, you have probably noticed the big block of text at the very top of the page. That is the Google AI Overview. Instead of just handing you a list of blue links, Google is now using artificial intelligence to read those links and summarize the answer for you.

For a lot of small business owners and home-service companies, this looks like a nightmare. If Google is just giving people the answer right there on the search page, why would anyone ever click through to your website? Will your plumbing or roofing company disappear beneath a wall of robot text?

I have had this conversation with several clients lately, and I want to clear the air. Yes, AI Overviews are changing how people search. No, they are not the end of local business marketing. In fact, if you handle your online presence correctly, you can actually use this shift to your advantage.

# Why local services are safe from the AI panic

Here is the most important thing to remember: AI cannot fix a broken air conditioner. It cannot pave a driveway, build a retaining wall, or replace a water heater.

When people search for general information, like how to unclog a drain, the AI Overview might give them a step-by-step guide. Some of those do-it-yourself folks might read the summary, grab a wrench, and never visit a website. But honestly, those people were never going to hire you anyway.

When someone is standing in a flooded basement, they are not looking for a summary of water damage. They are looking for a trustworthy local company to show up right now and fix the problem. For local intent searches, Google still relies heavily on the Local Pack, which is the map and the three businesses listed underneath it. AI is not replacing the map.

# How to show up when AI is doing the talking

Google AI Overviews pull their information from websites that Google trusts. If you want your business to be referenced in these AI summaries, or if you just want to make sure you stay visible in the traditional map and search results, you need to focus on trust and authority. The rules have not changed entirely, they have just become stricter.

Here is where you need to focus your energy today.

  • Keep your Google Business Profile flawless. This is still the cornerstone of local marketing. Make sure your address, phone number, hours, and service areas are completely accurate. Update your photos regularly. Google looks at this profile to understand exactly who you are and where you operate.
  • Collect real customer reviews constantly. AI systems are programmed to look for consensus. If a robot is trying to figure out who the best roofer in Kansas City is, it is going to look at reviews. A steady stream of honest, positive reviews tells Google that real humans trust your business.
  • Answer specific questions on your website. Your website should clearly explain what you do, who you do it for, and what problems you solve. Write out the questions your customers ask you on the phone every day, and answer them plainly on your service pages. If your site has clear, simple answers, Google is more likely to pull your information into an AI Overview.
  • Do not fall for AI SEO scams. You are going to get emails from companies promising to optimize your site specifically for AI algorithms for a monthly fee. Ignore them. There is no secret switch to flip. Good marketing is still about being the most relevant and trusted option in your service area.

# Focus on the fundamentals

At ZD Design, we have been watching search engines change for a long time. Every time Google rolls out a massive update, the marketing world panics. But the dust always settles.

The businesses that survive and thrive through these changes are the ones that stick to the fundamentals. They run honest businesses, they take care of their customers, and they make sure their website and Google Business Profile accurately reflect the quality of their work. AI is just another way of organizing information. If you provide great information and great service, you will be fine.

Bottom line: Google AI Overviews are changing the layout of the search results, but they are not replacing the need for local home-service companies. Keep your Google Business Profile updated, gather real reviews, answer your customers' questions clearly on your website, and let the robots do what they do.
